INFORMS Student Chapter at University of South Florida

The INFORMS student chapter at USF (INFORMS@USF) was established in 2005 with the main goal of educating USF students about different aspects of Operations Research and Management Science and expose them to the rich opportunities a career in industrial engineering can offer. Since then, our members have become actively involved in a vast variety of activities and have passed on their experience from one generation to another to maintain the chapter’s excellence. Although our chapter is fairly young, it has been nationally recognized receiving the following awards:

  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Cum Laude, San Diego, Nov 2009
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Magna Cum Laude, Austin, Nov 2010
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Summa Cum Laude, Charlotte, Nov 2011
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Summa Cum Laude, Phoenix, Oct 2012
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Summa Cum Laude, Minneapolis, Oct 2013
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Summa Cum Laude, San Francisco, Nov 2014
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Magna Cum Laude, Philadelphia, Nov 2015
  • The INFORMS Student Chapter Annual Award Cum Laude, Nashville, Nov 2016

INFORMS@USF holds and coordinates many activities that benefit its members, the Department of Industrial & Management Systems Engineering at USF and the community at large. Some of these activities include: lecture series and lunch gatherings with distinguished guest researchers, social events, community services. In our chapter, we care a great deal about nurturing an environment of sharing and camaraderie, so we hold many social activities including an international potluck, picnic and welcome parties. Last but not least, community engagement is one of our top priorities, and we work with other departments at USF as well as other organizations and companies in the area.

Chapter Future

The future plans are focused on expanding community activities and recognizing the efforts and excellence of chapter members. The chapter will conduct an annual competition among their members and offer a student award based on presentations, publications and community involvement. The money for the award will be raised by a Potluck fundraising event.

The chapter will increase and further develop the workshop series for undergraduate students in topics related to optimization and use of software such as Minitab, MATLAB, CPLEX, and SAS. This activity will enhance undergraduate student’s skills and promote the use of these tools. Participation of undergraduate IE students in the INFORMS chapter is being encouraged at present by the IMSE professors during their advising/mentoring sessions.

The chapter have planned to expand the connections with other INFORMS student chapters in other universities. As a graduate research exchange project, a member of each chapter visits another school to share his/her research. This will be an enrichment activity for the two chapters. The chapter will also extend other community activities through agreements with community service organizations in the Tampa Bay Region that have outreach programs.
